Benjamin Lawton. Composer.

BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Composition Wales Winner 2026.

Benjamin Lawton is a composer and classical pianist from Wiltshire, England. After discovering a love for classical music in his teenage years, he immersed himself in orchestral repertoire, teaching himself to compose through score study, analysis, and reading whilst developing his skills as a classical pianist under the mentorship of concert pianist, Nurry Lee.

In September 2023, Benjamin began formal training on the composition course at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where he is currently in his third year, studying under Mark Boden, Joseph Davies, and John Hardy. During his studies, several of his chamber works have been performed and recorded, and in November 2025 he received his first orchestral performance when the RWCMD Symphony Orchestra premiered one of his works at their Autumn Term concert, conducted by David Jones.

Benjamin’s current music particularly focuses on the ways in which large ensembles can generate strong rhythmic energy and sharp contrasts of colour. He has been particularly influenced by Stravinsky’s orchestral writing, especially his use of blurred and stacked harmonies, as well as his clear, driving gestures and rhythmic vitality, which create music that feels physical and unsettled.
